Bagru vs Sanganeri Bedsheets: How to Tell Them Apart (and Which to Stock)

By Hitesh Sharma, Founder · Jaipur Bedsheet Wholesale, Sanganer, Jaipur · Updated 22 October 2026

Quick answerSanganeri bedsheets have a white ground (safed zameen) with fine, delicate floral butis, mainly in red and black. Bagru bedsheets have a dyed ground – red, kathai (catechu brown) or indigo – with bolder, earthier motifs, and Bagru is also the home of Dabu mud-resist work. In the words of our family’s craft manual: Sanganer’s designs are fine (baariki), Bagru’s are bold (motai).

A little history from the book

Sanganer’s printing began in the late 17th century when Chhipa families from Gujarat settled there; the minerals in the Saraswati river’s water made vegetable colours brighter. Bagru has printed for about 500 years. An elderly Bagru artisan told the authors that his ancestors washed and steamed cloth in the Saanbhriya river near Bagru, which made colours brighter and fast.

Bagru prints were once made mostly for village communities, and colour showed identity: the Mali community preferred green, Meena women blue and red, Brahmin women yellow and red, and Rajput women pink and yellow. Bagru bedding (bichhona) and floor spreads (jajam) carried elephant, horse, deer and camel motifs, and chaupad, chauki and kamal butas. Through promotion, Bagru bedsheets reached Delhi, Madras, the metros and export markets.
