The naagin-sapera bichhavani: Sanganer’s signature bedspread
Our family’s book singles out the naagin-sapera bichhavani (bedspread) as one of the Sanganeri products in demand across India and abroad. It was made in a 60 × 90 size on cotton: black outline borders (pallu and edges) on all four sides, the snake-charmer buti printed in red across the centre, and black datai (fill). The same layout – border bel plus a field of butis – is still the backbone of most Sanganeri bedsheets today.
Traditional Sanganeri motif names for bedsheets
- Flowers: gulab (rose), chameli (jasmine), kamal (lotus), kachnar, dhatura, bel-patta, Sanganeri jhaad, phoolri.
- Fruits: keri (raw mango), daakh (grape), angoor, nimbu (lemon), singhada, supari, imarti.
- Birds and animals: mor (peacock), titli (butterfly), hiran (deer), haathi (elephant), tota (parrot).
- Big butas: naachte mor, daudte haathi (running elephant), ambaari ka haathi (elephant with howdah), bad (banyan), naagin-sapera.

The book records 57 butas, 359 butis, 28 bels and 15 jaals in the traditional Sanganer repertoire – about 400 named designs. In Sanganeri butas the flowers usually lean to the left, a small detail printers use to recognise the style.
